Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes
If you have an offer of place into a New Zealand University or Polytechnic* for study in a programme conditional upon improving your English language level, the Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP) will meet your needs. Students are required to meet the ELA language requirements to enter the programme through the ELA Placement test.
(*This is on a case-by-case basis. The ELA admissions staff will liaise on your behalf with the institution that has given you a conditional offer of place for approval into FCertEAP).
The FCertEAP is a programme developed to prepare students for academic studies in all aspects of English language including note-taking, academic report and essay writing, exam preparation, presentation skills and communication techniques.
Students need to achieve the following grades in order to meet their English requirements as stated on their Conditional Offer of Place:
| FCertEAP A Grade | meets English language entry requirements for postgraduate diplomas and master degrees* |
| FCertEAP B Grade | meets English language entry requirements for postgraduate diplomas and some undergraduate degrees* |
| FCertEAP C Grade | meets English language entry requirements for most undergraduate degrees* |
*Some degrees and diploma require a higher IELTS or TOEFL score or FCertEAP grade. Please refer to The University of Auckland website www.auckland.ac.nz for details.
If you are going to another New Zealand tertiary institution please refer to their website for details as programme requirements may differ from The University of Auckland.

Conditional Offer of Place from The University of Auckland or another New Zealand tertiary institution, conditional on English Language; AND an acceptable score in the ELA Placement Test (conducted the Wednesday before course commencement) If using an Academic IELTS test score, please note that the equivalent entry level for an undergraduate applicant is an IELTS 5.0 overall, with no less than 5.0 in Writing and for a postgraduate applicant is an IELTS 5.5 overall, with no less than 5.5 in Writing. IELTS test must be within 12 months from the enrolment date. |
