ELA Senior Academic Team
I have worked in English language education for 25 years in Canada, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates and the last 14 years in New Zealand. After completing my Master in Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in English Language Teaching, my teaching focus was in English for Academic Purposes for tertiary level students. During my time at the ELA, I have held several roles including, Teacher, Groups Academic Advisor, Academic English and Pathways Manager and Curriculum Development Manager; I am currently the Director of Studies and am responsible for overseeing all ELA courses and programmes. I am immensely passionate about teaching and learning whilst maintaining the highest level of quality of delivery. In addition, I have a strong interest in the professional growth of academic staff.
I am originally from Ireland and started my English language teaching career just over 20 years ago. I taught in Italy for two years, but then moved back to Ireland, where I taught in a language school teaching General English, Business English and Exam Preparation courses. In 2005, I started working in a Foundation College in Ireland, and began to specialise in teaching Academic English. I started working in the ELA in 2011 as a teacher, before becoming the Manager for Academic English courses 5 years ago. I have completed a Graduate Diploma and a Master of TESOL, and have presented at TESOL conferences in New Zealand on different aspects of teaching Academic English and designing Academic English courses.
I started my career in TESOL in Europe 14 years ago. I completed my teaching qualifications in The Netherlands and Spain and spent four years teaching General and Business English in Amsterdam before moving back to New Zealand in 2010. For the last ten years I have worked at the ELA, firstly as a General and Academic English tutor, before becoming the Manager of General English in 2015. During this time, I also gained my Master of TESOL. I love meeting new students, hearing about their learning goals and then watching their confidence and language ability develop during their time at ELA.
I took my CELTA and started teaching English at a summer school in London, 20 years ago. From there I moved to Istanbul, where I stayed for nearly 12 years. While there I taught adults and young learners, one-to-one and Business English. I completed a Cambridge DELTA and worked for 5 years as a Director of Studies in a large language school before training to become a CELTA Trainer. I worked as a full-time CELTA trainer for 2 years before moving back to Auckland to work at the ELA and complete a Master of TESOL at the University of Auckland. I am now the Manager for Groups and Specialised programmes, and have also been involved in projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and China.
I am a Cambridge CELTA trainer and I hold a Master of Education, specialising in e-learning. After teaching EFL in England 20 years ago, I returned to my homeland of Canada, where I helped establish the first CELTA centre in the province of Quebec. In the 12 years that I have worked at ELA, I have taught General and Academic English, specialised teacher-training groups and Cambridge exam preparation courses. As the Manager of Teacher Training, I oversee our teachers’ professional development and I teach on both the CELTA and TKT courses.
