Reception
If you need any help, go to reception first, they are always happy to help students. If they can’t help you, they will direct you to the appropriate person.
Pastoral Care
Our Student Services team can help you with any issues you may face while studying at ELA. They are available to talk to through a variety of apps or text, are happy to help students with any questions or support they need, and will help you get the most out of your study experience, whether online or on-campus.
ELA has agreed to observe and be bound by the New Zealand Government's Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice. A copy of the Code can be found through HERE.
Academic Support
You can always make an appointment to meet a senior teacher either online or on-campus to talk about your study and your progress. Our senior teachers are highly qualified English language professionals with postgraduate teaching pathways and will be happy to support your study goals.
Study Centre
Gain Support and Guidance at ELA's Study Centre
ELA’s Study Centre offers various opportunities for students to improve their English skills. This is the central hub for students to access a range of interactive and engaging activities both inside and outside the school. Students can practice their English conversation with Meet2Chat sessions, led by University of Auckland volunteers twice a week. Students are also able to enjoy ELA organised extra-curricular activities to practice their English in real-life situations. Students have access to be able to view, review and book all study centre activities online through our Student Experience Course.
Orientation
Seamless Start at ELA: Your First-Day Orientation and Resources
On your very first day, our welcoming team is here to make sure you feel at ease, on campus. We'll send you a helpful welcome pack via email before you begin. Plus, we offer an IT workshop to guide you in setting up your log-ins and passwords for accessing CANVAS, which is ELA's online learning system.
During orientation, we'll cover everything you need to get started at ELA, such as details about your courses, online activities, and getting to know your classmates. And, don't worry, we also provide a question and answer session to assist you in understanding your course.
Student Concerns
ELA Problem-Solving Guidelines
If you have any concerns about how you are treated by ELA, please follow the steps below. You are able to raise a concern individually or in a group. You can also bring a support person.
Step 1: Talk to the person involved
Most issues can be resolved through open and honest communication
If you would like to speak to someone in your first language, ELA can organise this
Step 2: Ask to speak with a member of the Senior Leadership Team
Depending on the issue, this could be the Academic Manager, Student Experience and Campus Manager, Business Development Manager, or the Director
You can raise any concerns individually, with a support person or as a group
This manager will then take time to investigate your issue
Step 3: Additional Contacts
Our school is a member of English New Zealand. If you have a complaint that we haven’t been able to resolve, you may wish to write to our professional body and ask for assistance using admin@englishnewzealand.co.nz
If you believe the issue has not been resolved fairly, you can contact Study Complaints, a free and independent complaints service. It is funded by the Ministry of Education
