In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to recognise 25 students from City University of Hong Kong, currently studying at The University of Auckland English Language Academy. As part of CALIS (Cultural and Language Immersion Scheme), these students have spent four weeks combining English language study with hands-on volunteering across Auckland. Their placements—ranging from the New Zealand Maritime Museum and elder care homes like Northbridge Lifecare Trust, to charity shops including New Zealand Red Cross and The Salvation Army New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga & Samoa — have allowed them to develop communication skills, engage with local culture, and support community organisations.Dr Mary Pang (Associate Dean Internationalisation) from CityU:“It’s been heartwarming to see our students connect with locals, share stories over tea, and contribute to causes that really matter.”Now in its 18th year at ELA, CALIS continues to promote meaningful cultural exchange and the value of volunteering. We thank our students and partner organisations for making this experience so impactful.
