ELA recently created a dedicated Matariki room to help students learn about Aotearoa New Zealand's Māori New Year through an engaging and interactive cultural experience.

The room features displays explaining the history and meaning of Matariki, the significance of the Matariki star cluster, and the role of Puanga for some iwi. Students can learn about important themes including remembrance, wellbeing, gratitude, community, the environment, and hopes for the future.

According to Nadia Kennington, Student Experience Manager: “One of the most rewarding parts of the Matariki room has been seeing students engage with the activities, share their experiences, and learn from one another. Experiences like this help students feel more connected to New Zealand culture and to the ELA community.”

Students have taken part in a wide range of hands-on activities, including creating woven paper stars, colouring Matariki designs, making nature-inspired artwork, listening to the songs of native New Zealand birds, writing wishes for the year ahead, and participating in reflection activities.

Students have also enjoyed tasting kūmara chips, helping them learn about the harvest traditions associated with Matariki.
