The ELA is still operating during this period and will be delivering our classes online until the end of 2020, as well as re-opening for face-to-face teaching once permitted by government protocol. Our passionate and experienced teaching and student services teams have been set up to work from home to support students and partner universities with online study using a range of platforms and tools. These are extraordinary times and we want to assure you that we will do everything we can to support your English language learning at this time and moving forward.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the academic team at the ELA was already planning to roll out a new Learning Management System (LMS), as used by the University of Auckland, to support our face-to-face classes. With the start of worldwide travel restrictions, we have brought this forward and extended the scope so that we are now able to run all our classes online.
Our fantastic teachers have been doing amazing work to provide their online classes with a fun, communicative online learning experience. Our online students engage in 20 hours per week of study. Online class duration is the same as face-to-face, but as well as seeing their teacher every day online via Zoom, the following are also key components of each course:
• Teachers make course material available via Canvas (our LMS) with some tasks required to be done before class
• Students engage in discussion forums, work together in ‘breakout rooms’ and collaborate on shared documents with classmates
• Teachers give language feedback and answer questions
• Students work on self-study projects / assignments and homework
